Mastodon Explained

I started using Twitter in 2006 and it quickly became a consistent part of my online life. In fact, I made an explainer video that Twitter used on its front page for over a year. Recently, I moved away from Twitter for a variety of reasons that include ownership and new policies around privacy and safety.

Recently I began learning about and using Mastodon on a daily basis and quickly became excited about it not only replacing Twitter for many, but representing a new direction in social media that’s more people-powered.

Indeed, Mastodon is part of a much bigger movement toward social media that is owned and operated by users instead of profit-seeking companies like Twitter, Inc. It is one part of a growing class of federated social media projects often known as the “Feditverse”

What I quickly realized is that Mastodon has an explanation problem. Its adoption is limited by how it is often explained. We set out to help solve this problem with the video above. We created it to help the Mastodon-curious see what to expect and why it matters that social media is becoming people-powered.
